Buyer-intent lead generation software: which type do you need?

Short answer: buyer-intent lead generation software finds people or companies showing signs they are ready to buy. There are three main types. Most of the well-known names sell to B2B sales teams, so a small online store usually needs the third type: a tool that finds individual people asking for a product in public.

We make Lead Harbour, so we have a bias. Other tools are described in general terms as of November 2026. Check their sites for current features and prices.

Why B2B intent data doesn't suit a store

B2B intent data watches which companies read about a topic, then tells a sales team to contact them. A store selling candles to individual shoppers has no use for that. Its customers are people, not accounts, and its order value is far too low for a sales process built around big contracts.

Where social listening falls short

Keyword monitoring is useful and often cheap. F5Bot and Syften are good at telling you a word appeared. The catch for a store is volume: the word "candle" appears in reviews, jokes, DIY threads and sellers' own posts. You still do the sorting. It suits you if you enjoy that, or need to track your brand name.

What to check in any buyer-intent tool

  1. What is the signal? A person writing "where can I buy this?" is strong. A company reading an article is weak.
  2. Can you see the evidence? You should be able to open the original post or source.
  3. How fresh is it? Buying moments pass quickly, so check that dates are shown.
  4. Who does the outreach? Tools that post or message for you put your accounts at risk.
  5. Does it collect personal data? Enriching strangers with emails raises legal and spam questions. Replying to a public post does not need that.
  6. Does the price fit your order value? Work out how many sales pay for it.

What to do with no software

You can start for free. Search for buyer phrases on Reddit and Google, and reply to recent posts. Our guide to finding buying-intent posts lists the phrases. Software becomes worthwhile when your time costs more than the subscription, or when you know the method works and want it done daily.

Where Lead Harbour fits

Lead Harbour is the third type, built only for ecommerce. It is not a CRM, an email list or a B2B data product. It reads your store, finds recent public posts from people asking for products like yours, explains why each one fits, and drafts a reply you send yourself. It doesn't collect contact details. For the idea behind it, read buying-intent lead generation for small online stores.

Common questions

What is buyer-intent software?

Software that finds signs someone is ready to buy, such as a company researching a topic or a person asking for a product in public, so you can reach them at the right moment.

What is the best buyer-intent software for ecommerce?

It depends on your customers. For stores selling to individuals, look for a tool that finds people asking in public, rather than B2B intent data. Lead Harbour is built for this.

Is buyer-intent lead generation the same as a CRM?

No. A CRM organises contacts you already have. Buyer-intent tools find new people who are showing interest.
