How to find customers for your pet store

Pet owners are some of the most active askers online. A new puppy, a cat that destroys every toy, a dog with a sensitive stomach: each post is someone ready to buy the right product.

This page shows where pet product buyers ask, the words they use, when demand peaks, and how to reply so it does not feel like an ad.

Where pet product buyers ask

WhereWhat people ask for
r/dogs, r/puppy101 and r/catsToy, bed, harness and food questions
r/BuyItForLifeIndestructible toys, durable leads and beds
Breed subreddits, e.g. r/goldenretrievers or r/germanshepherdsBreed-specific gear and sizing
Facebook groups for dog and cat ownersLocal and national recommendation requests

Read each community's rules before you reply. Most allow helpful answers from sellers but remove plain links and copy-paste ads.

What a buyer's post looks like

These are typical of the posts you are looking for. Each one names a need, and often a budget or a deadline:

Typical post

"My lab destroys every toy in 10 minutes. Anything that actually lasts?"

Typical post

"Looking for a no-pull harness for a 4 month old puppy, what worked for you?"

Typical post

"Need a calming bed for an anxious rescue dog, medium size."

Search phrases that find them

Paste these into Google, then sort or filter by the past week so you only see posts that are still open:

On Reddit itself, search your product word plus "recommend" or "looking for" and sort by New. Our guide on finding buying-intent posts has more phrases.

When demand peaks

All year, with spikes after Christmas (new puppies), in spring and around Black Friday.

How to reply

  1. Answer the question first. Give a real recommendation, even if it is general advice.
  2. Say you make or sell it. Being open about it builds trust, and most communities expect it.
  3. Add a detail that helps them decide: a price, a size, how long delivery takes.
  4. Reply from your own account, and only to posts that are recent and still open.

Example reply

"Hi! For heavy chewers, solid rubber toys hold up far better than plush or rope. We make one in natural rubber that's sized for labs. It's not truly indestructible, but it lasts months rather than minutes."

Skip the searching

Doing this by hand takes an hour or more a day. Lead Harbour does it for you: paste your pet store link and it finds recent public posts from people asking for what you sell, checks each one is a real buyer, and writes a reply like the one above. You send it yourself from your own account.

Talk to other store owners

Our Discord server is where store owners share what works: which posts convert, how they word replies, and what to avoid. Free to join, and you can ask us anything there.

Common questions

Where do pet owners ask for product recommendations?

Reddit (r/dogs, r/puppy101, r/cats and breed subreddits), r/BuyItForLife for durable gear, and public Facebook groups for owners.

How do I reply to pet owners without sounding like an ad?

Be honest about limits (no toy is truly indestructible), answer the actual problem, then mention your product. Pet communities reward honesty.

How does Lead Harbour find pet product buyers?

Paste your store link and Lead Harbour reads what you sell, then searches public posts on Reddit, Facebook, Quora and forums for people asking for it. Sellers, ads and old posts are filtered out, and each lead comes with a reply you send yourself. Your first 5 buyers cost $1.
